If you are a user of Intermittent Catheters, you may have noticed that some products that were previously non-taxable are now taxable as of January 1, 2023.  The sale of all intermittent catheters to distributors, retailers and hospitals are now subject to tax.  However, with a prescription, the tax for you as a customer can be waived. In accordance with Section 25.1 of Schedule VI, Part II of the Excise Tax Act, intermittent catheters are exempt from tax “if the catheter is supplied on the written order of a healthcare professional for use by a consumer named on the order”.  This means that an intermittent catheter is only exempt for end users who have received a written prescription from a health care professional.
